Where It All Started
In 2020, what we all know now as the global Pandemic started, it caused the world to grind to a screeching halt. How ever, farm life never really changed. People still need food, which become a common saying around our board room table. So we grow food. Yes going to town became problematic, churches closed their doors, and grocery shopping looked a lot different, but when spring rolled around the seeds went into the ground. Four and a half months later harvest began. With less time spent running around it promoted a lot of thinking time on our farm. In the fall of 2020the idea was born, right around hunting season I may add, when we noticed the deer jumping onto our pea field right after the combines rolled off the field. They were eating up anything the combines had missed or thrown over. It was right there and then that the research began.
See what we didn't know then that we know now, pulses such as peas are a super food. They promote both physical growth in body mass and antler mass, milk production, fertility improvement, and post rut recovery. So if you love deer and the wildlife around you its a win either way you look at it. What we also found out was the way you feed deer either for baiting or supplement feeding can damage the health of the deer through disease, or predator targeting, so a strategy through observing natural feeding behaviors had be established. With our recommendation we came up with a plan.

Baiting and Supplement Feeding Strategy
- Spread out the feeding area, make it large.
- Place small amounts in several area.
- Avoid area where they have to fight to get access to feed.
- If possible have many spot several hundred yard apart which allows for individual family groups to be by them selves. (Deer naturally spend winter alone with small family units 5 deer max.) any more then that could be potential cross contamination through saliva.
- When it comes to predators, find a hunter or trapper in you area.
- If the later isn't possible try feed the deer in the open where they can see all around them.
- If possible feed the deer close to groomed trails or where the snow is well packed so the deer can run far enough and fast enough to flee the predators clutches.
